If the stork - Sonia Kamnitzer

If the stork in his navy-blue tuxedo
emerges from his pickup truck
in front of your garage sale

If he strides up your driveway,
itching his nose,
and approaches a well-used broom

as you stare
and hesitantly ask him,
“Can I help you?”

If, gently,
he unscrews the handle cap
with the tips of his claws

and removes
a strand
of golden vibrating thread.

If he chuckles and says,
“Huh! My hair has been ending up
in the strangest of places!”

If you then share a confused glance with your sister,
and respond,
“I am sorry, I do not understand.”

And if you watch him, put the hair back onto his scalp.
and if you watch how the hair shines a little brighter,
a little bluer.

If you watch him walk back to his truck
saying over his shoulder,
“Thanks!”

Then you will see the sun,
snatch back
the strand.
